Overview

The Chariot, card 7 of the Major Arcana, brings the determination to move through resistance. Its driver looks ready to set out, even though the two sphinxes before him do not appear to be going anywhere.

That tension tells us something about the card. Wanting to move is only part of the task. You also need a direction and the ability to bring conflicting impulses into agreement. Otherwise, a great deal of effort can leave you in the same place.

In a reading, the Chariot often asks you to act on a decision. It can concern ambition, a journey or a project that needs to reach completion. It also raises a question about control: are you directing your own actions, or trying to force everyone else to follow your course?

A Closer Look at The Chariot

Description

An armoured figure stands in a stone chariot beneath a canopy decorated with stars. Crescent moons sit on his shoulders, and a square appears on his breastplate. His crown combines a star with a laurel wreath.

A black sphinx and a white sphinx rest in front of the chariot. There are no visible reins. The driver holds a wand, suggesting that his authority depends on will and attention rather than a physical tether.

The city is behind him. He is leaving familiar surroundings, though they remain part of where he has come from. Wings and a disc decorate the front of the vehicle, alongside a symbol of the union of opposites. The Chariot is associated with Cancer.

Meaning

The Chariot concerns movement with purpose. Its strength comes from having a direction and staying with it through difficulty.

Upright

Upright, the Chariot foretells triumph over adversity and progress from one goal to another. Stability, determination and the ability to persevere will carry you to a successful outcome.

Travel or a change of surroundings may be involved. Sometimes a journey creates the distance needed to move beyond a situation. The card’s movement is purposeful: choose the direction and keep your effort focused.

Reversed

Reversed, the Chariot indicates interrupted movement, an unjust victory or force used to oppress. A bully or controlling person may be driving the situation.

Travel can be halted or unwise at this time. You may be pushing so hard that the method undermines the goal, or pursuing an ambition that benefits only yourself. Pause and reassess the direction before continuing.

The Symbolism of The Chariot

  • The black and white sphinxes: Opposing impulses and the riddles that have to be understood before progress is possible.
  • The stone vehicle: The conditions within which we act. Its square form suggests stability and the limits of material life.
  • The absence of reins: Control through attention and will. The driver has to coordinate the forces before him.
  • The starry canopy and crown: A wider sense of purpose, alongside personal independence and aspiration.
  • The laurel wreath: Achievement and the desire to overcome a challenge.
  • The crescent moons: Changing feelings and the different experiences that shape a person.
  • The armour: Readiness and protection. A protective exterior can also conceal vulnerability.
  • The wand: Confidence in one’s abilities and a link with the Magician.
  • The winged disc: Inspiration and an inner direction for the journey.
  • The city and surrounding land: The life the driver is leaving behind. Moving forward does not erase your beginnings.

What The Chariot Means in a Reading

Meaning for Love and Relationships

Upright

The Chariot asks for directness in love. If you want to meet someone, take an active part in it. If you are in a relationship, say what you need instead of hoping your partner will work it out from hints.

You can choose how you act and communicate; your partner still has their own choices to make. The card encourages initiative without treating a relationship as something to conquer. Consider whether you are both travelling in a direction you want.

Reversed

Reversed, the Chariot asks you to slow down. If the relationship is progressing more slowly than you want, patience will allow events to unfold in their own time. Forcing the next stage can backfire.

Do not accept pressure to commit before you are ready. Establish clear boundaries and consider what you want. If you are single, the card can predict meeting someone soon; enjoy the beginning while taking time to know the person.

Meaning for Career

Upright

At work, the Chariot favours concentrated effort. Choose a direction, make a decision and start carrying it out. Procrastination or perfectionism may be keeping a capable person from finishing.

If you are close to completing a project, a clear deadline and someone to check in with can help you follow through. When several priorities compete, decide which one needs your attention first. Progress requires more than having ambitious plans.

Reversed

The reversed Chariot can suggest that you are attempting too much before the foundations are ready. Ambition remains, but the pace or approach needs adjustment.

Look at the obstacle you keep meeting. It may call for a different sequence of steps, a gentler approach or a more realistic goal. Pushing colleagues harder will not necessarily make the work move faster.

Meaning for Health and Well-Being

Upright

The Chariot calls for movement and action. Improvement comes through putting your energy into the work, rather than dwelling on what you wish you had begun earlier. You have the determination to take charge and move forward.

Choose a direction and commit to it. In a health reading, the Chariot brings the drive to overcome obstacles and become an example of perseverance.

Reversed

Reversed, the Chariot warns against doing too much too quickly. Enthusiasm can become overexertion, increasing the risk of injury or starting a routine you cannot sustain.

Build your fitness gradually. The same determination that helps you begin will serve you better when you give it a manageable pace.

Meaning for Finances

Upright

The Chariot is favourable when a financial question concerns purchasing a vehicle. More broadly, it calls for decisive action to gain control of your financial position. Wishing for a windfall will not replace a clear plan.

Treat the situation as a journey: know where you are starting, where you want to arrive and which action comes first. Face the figures honestly and begin. Lottery tickets and passive hope do not fit this card’s message.

Reversed

Reversed, the Chariot advises slowing down before carrying out an ambitious financial plan. Get additional opinions and examine the details, especially if a proposal appears unusually easy or rewarding.

Effort is valuable, but it needs direction. Check that the course you are following will take you where you intend to go.

Timing

The Chariot predicts a significant event within the next 30 days. His Cancer association gives the date range June 21 to July 21.

Expect movement: a journey, a decisive advance or the achievement of a goal you have been pursuing.

Yes or No Questions

The Chariot answers yes. It foretells a favourable journey, progress or the final achievement you have been pursuing. Confidence, direction and commitment carry you toward victory.

Reversed, it suggests pausing to restore direction. Consider whether your chosen approach will actually take you where you want to go.
