Overview
The Magician turns possibility into action. He brings the skill, focus and creative power needed to begin a new cycle. If you know what you want, this card asks you to use the resources already within reach.
His raised hand receives inspiration from the Divine, while the other directs it toward the earth. He is a conduit between spiritual energy and a tangible result. Confidence matters, but so does knowing what you are doing and why.
A closer look at The Magician
Description
The Magician stands behind a table holding the tools of the four tarot suits: a wand, cup, sword and pentacle. His right hand raises a wand toward the heavens and his left points toward the ground. Above his head floats the infinity sign.
He wears a white robe beneath a red mantle, with a snake biting its own tail around his waist. Red roses and white lilies repeat the colours below him. Numbered one and associated with Mercury, he joins intellect and skill with the will to create.
Meaning
Upright
The upright Magician predicts progress through reason, determination and the deliberate use of your abilities. A task is ready for your attention. Gather what you need and put your plan into motion.
He follows The Fool: the open possibility of zero becomes the purposeful beginning of one. His strength comes from applying the mind, body and creative will to the same goal.
Reversed
Reversed, The Magician warns of inadequate preparation, misunderstood circumstances or skills that have not been developed. A project may fail if you act on confidence alone. The surrounding cards can clarify whether more planning is needed or the undertaking is unsuitable.
Manipulation is another possibility. Use your power with integrity, and be alert to someone whose persuasive performance conceals a different purpose.

The Magician as Feelings
In a question about someone's feelings, The Magician can describe intention and attraction. Its orientation and position help explain how that emotional pattern is expressed.
Upright feelings
Intention and attraction
The Magician can indicate strong interest and a wish to act on it. Someone may feel confident about drawing you closer and willing to use their charm, words or practical abilities to make the connection happen. Desire is accompanied by a sense of possibility.
Reversed feelings
Charm used to control
Reversed, attraction may be mixed with manipulation or a gap between words and action. Someone can know how to create an impression without being prepared to follow through. Read the existing reversed interpretation carefully when charm seems stronger than sincerity.
A hypothetical relationship reading
If the Magician appears in an action position, it can foretell a direct approach or an effort to win your attention. As feelings, it describes the confidence and intention behind that approach.
Read these feelings through the question and the card's position. The full love and relationship interpretations below explain how the same emotional pattern can affect a connection.
The Magician in a reading
Suppose you ask whether to launch a service using a skill you already have. Upright, The Magician favours beginning: gather the tools, make a clear offer and put the skill to work. Reversed, he may reveal a gap between what you promise and what you can deliver, or mistrust among the people involved.
The Two of Wands considers the direction to take. The Magician starts making it real, while The Emperor supplies the structure needed to sustain it.
Love and relationships
Upright
The Magician favours passionate attraction and strong physical chemistry, though his trickster side can appear in courtship. If you want a relationship, reach out and take an active part in creating the connection.
For an existing couple, problems need honest communication and effort from both people. Say what you want, listen to your partner and act on what you agree.
Reversed
Deception or manipulation may be weakening the relationship. Resist using a partner to get what you want, and consider whether someone is using their influence over you for personal gain.
If you are single, disappointment may have hardened into cynicism. The card asks you to recognise that pattern so it does not close off the possibility of love.
Career
Upright
Put your abilities where people can see and use them. The Magician favours taking initiative and building the habits, support and working arrangements that let your talent produce results. Your own purpose deserves attention alongside other people's agendas.
Reversed
Available opportunities may be going unused. Fear of failure or success can keep you from attempting work that would stretch your abilities. Identify what makes the change difficult rather than repeatedly putting it off.
If you have doubts about prospective business partners, the reversed card may confirm that caution is justified.
Health and well-being
Upright
The Magician is favourable in a health reading. He predicts progress through a determined approach, especially when beginning a fitness or well-being routine. Apply your energy consistently to the goal.
Reversed
The reversed card still supports healing, but confidence may need restoring. Believe in your capacity to improve while seeking the professional help you need. Difficulty does not have to leave you feeling powerless.
Finances
Upright
The Magician connects prosperity with focused creativity. Use your particular talents to create something of value, then share it rather than keeping it hidden. In this card's spiritual meaning, the Universe supports creativity, integrity and generosity.
Clarity about what you can offer helps turn that potential into money and resources.
Reversed
You may feel stuck or unable to influence your financial circumstances. Examine whether an old approach is producing the same unwanted result. The card asks you to use your abilities differently and make a workable plan.
The Magician and Other Cards
A neighbouring card can emphasise, complicate or change the direction of a reading. Compare what each card contributes before deciding how they connect.
The question gives the pair its context
The Magician brings power, ability, concentration into the reading. The Fool adds new beginnings, innocence, spontaneity. In a spread, identify which card describes the situation and which describes a response, influence or outcome.
If either card is reversed, compare its reversed interpretation too. A reversal can alter whether a quality is available, obstructed or expressed in a difficult way. The meanings are connected through the question rather than simply added together.
Practise those connections with How to Read Tarot Card Combinations and a three-card spread.
Timing
The Magician predicts a significant event within the next 30 days.
Yes or no
The answer is yes. Take action with awareness, use your skills and commit your energy to the result you want.
Number and astrological correspondence
Mercury helps explain the Magician’s use of skill, communication and available tools. Compare what he can deliberately organise with the turning conditions of the Wheel and the visible results of the Sun.

The Mercury assignment comes from the Golden Dawn’s Book T. Our tarot and astrology overview explains how the planetary, zodiacal and elemental assignments differ. A correspondence adds to this card’s established meanings; use its position and orientation to decide whether it describes a condition, advice or a forecast.
