A three-card spread gives a reading three positions, each with a meaning you choose before drawing. You interpret a card in relation to its position, then consider how the cards connect. This is a manageable next step after a one-card reading.

Choose the positions before drawing

The same three cards can tell a different story when their positions change. Decide what each position means and write it beside your question.

Layout First card Second card Third card
Time Past Present Future
A situation Situation Opportunity Challenge
A response Issue Action Result
Personal reflection Body Mind Spirit

Choose the layout that fits what you want to explore. “Situation, opportunity and challenge” gives you a way to examine something happening now. “Past, present and future” considers how earlier events relate to the present and a possible direction ahead.

Lay out and read the cards

Write a clear question, shuffle and place three cards in a line from left to right. A triangular arrangement can also work if you decide the placement order in advance.

  1. 1Past
  2. 2Present
  3. 3Future

Look at the whole spread before interpreting individual cards. Notice repeated suits, numbers or colors, and whether the figures seem to face one another. Then read each card through its position and the question.

Use the card meanings library when you need help. After reviewing all three cards, explain the reading in a few sentences that connect them.

Example: past, present and future

Suppose the question is “What do I need to know right now?” and the cards are The Tower, Ace of Cups and The Fool.

Position Card A possible interpretation
Past The Tower A recent upheaval has changed familiar circumstances.
Present Ace of Cups Emotional openness or a new creative possibility is beginning to emerge.
Future The Fool A new beginning asks for willingness to enter unfamiliar territory.

Together, these cards can suggest a movement from disruption toward an emotional opening and a fresh start. You might consider what the change has made possible and whether you are ready to follow that possibility.

The two Major Arcana cards give the reading themes of upheaval and beginning. The Ace of Cups connects them through the emotional experience of the change.

Example: situation, opportunity and challenge

For “What do I need to know about my relationship?”, suppose you draw the Two of Cups, The Lovers and The Empress.

The Two of Cups in the situation position can suggest mutual attraction and an emotional bond. The Lovers in the opportunity position can point to a chance to deepen that bond through choices both people make.

The Empress in the challenge position asks you to examine nurturing and care. Does one person take on more of the caring role? Are expectations about family or the future different? The circumstances of the relationship help you decide which interpretation fits.

This example also shows how a card often read positively can describe a challenge. The position matters, and a meaning needs to fit the question and the other cards.

Record the reading and return to it

Write the question, position meanings, cards and your interpretation in your tarot journal. Include any points you could not resolve. When you revisit the reading, note what became clearer and whether you would connect the cards differently now.
