Overview

Death foretells an ending that changes the shape of your life. A relationship, job, project or way of living may have reached its limit. Letting it end allows a new phase to begin, although the passage can bring sadness, reluctance or relief.

Card 13 usually describes symbolic death: an old identity, attachment or arrangement gives way to something new. Physical death is a rare interpretation and depends on the circumstances of the reading. The card's ordinary emphasis is release, transformation and renewal.

Upright, the change is arriving or already taking place. Reversed, resistance can prolong the transition and leave you caught between the life that has ended and the one that has not yet begun.

A closer look at Death

Description

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse. He carries a black banner bearing a white, five-petalled rose. A fallen king lies beneath the horse, while a bishop faces the rider with clasped hands. A child and a young woman are also in the scene.

The skeleton expresses what remains after the body's outward form has gone. The armour suggests an unstoppable force, and the white horse brings purity and renewal into the image. Neither royal status nor religious office can prevent the passage.

The Rider-Waite-Smith figure carries a banner, not a scythe. Waite's description also identifies the horseman as unarmed. The white rose and the sun shining between distant towers give life a place within the image of death.

A small boat appears on the river in the background. In a symbolic reading, it can evoke the passage of souls and the movement between life's stages.

Meaning

Upright

Upright Death indicates a natural conclusion or a major adjustment that cannot be put off indefinitely. A project may have completed its evolution. An established situation may be changing beyond recognition.

The reading asks how you respond to endings. Clinging to what has finished can make the transition harder, while letting go too readily can overlook something that still has value. Recognise what has genuinely reached its end and allow the next phase to take shape.

Reversed

Reversed Death concerns stagnation and resistance. Fear of losing security, routine or a familiar identity can prevent a necessary change. The new phase remains out of reach while the old one is kept in place.

The card asks for willingness to make the adjustment. A change that you have been avoiding may be the condition for moving forward.

The symbolism of Death

  • The armoured skeleton personifies death and the limits of worldly power. Its presence cannot be negotiated away.
  • The white horse carries strength and vitality through the scene. White also suggests purification, completion and a fresh start.
  • The black banner and white rose bring an ending and the promise of life together. The flower's five petals connect the image with a cycle of sowing and harvest.
  • The fallen king shows that temporal power cannot stop the passage.
  • The bishop's clasped hands show religious authority meeting a force beyond its control.
  • The river and boat evoke a crossing. The distant sun suggests renewal beyond the immediate ending.

Death as Feelings

In a question about someone's feelings, Death can describe feelings undergoing a lasting change. Its orientation and position help explain how that emotional pattern is expressed.

Upright feelings

Feelings undergoing a lasting change

Death can indicate that a person's emotional relationship to the bond is changing substantially. An old phase may be ending, making room for a different connection or a departure. The card concerns a real transition rather than a passing mood.

Reversed feelings

Difficulty releasing the old phase

Reversed, someone may cling to what the relationship used to be or resist an ending they can already feel approaching. Attachment can continue while the bond itself has stopped developing. The surrounding cards show whether renewal is possible or moving on is needed.

A hypothetical relationship reading

In an outcome position, Death can foretell the end of a relationship phase. As feelings, it describes the emotional change behind that ending or renewal. Read the other positions before deciding which form the transition will take.

Read these feelings through the question and the card's position. The full love and relationship interpretations below explain how the same emotional pattern can affect a connection.

Death in a reading

Death and The Tower both concern change, but the Tower emphasises sudden upheaval. Death describes the ending and transformation themselves. Temperance follows Death in the Major Arcana and concerns finding a workable balance after change.

For example, suppose you ask about a job that has become unfulfilling and draw Death upright. It can foretell the close of that working chapter, including a change you have not chosen. Reversed, it can describe staying because the routine feels secure, even while you know that a different direction is needed.

Love and relationships

Upright

If you are seeking love, Death asks you to release previous relationships and the expectations carried from them. A new connection becomes possible when old habits and assumptions no longer determine it.

For an existing relationship, Death is an unfavourable sign when the question concerns whether the bond will continue as it is. Its finality can indicate an ending or a change so substantial that the old arrangement cannot remain.

Reversed

Reversed, Death can indicate holding on to a relationship through dependence, obligation or fear of being alone. The bond may have passed its natural end, but neither person is willing to release it.

A long-dormant relationship may also resurface. If you are single, the card asks you to let go of harmful relationship habits and rebuild confidence before expecting a different experience of love.

Career

Upright

Death foretells major changes at work, sometimes involuntary ones. A job may end, a promotion may fail to arrive or a familiar professional situation may be altered.

The difficult period is a transition. What follows can work out, although it may take a form different from the one you expected. Allow an exhausted working arrangement to finish so that another direction has room to develop.

Reversed

Reversed Death can indicate that a change of job or direction is due, but fear of losing security keeps you in place. An unfulfilling routine may feel easier to tolerate than an uncertain beginning.

Consider the habits that keep you from moving towards the work you want. The reading calls for changing those habits as well as the circumstances around you.

Health and well-being

Upright

In a health reading, Death usually concerns transformation in how you live. Physical death is a rare possibility whose relevance depends on the circumstances and the surrounding reading.

The more usual message is to make use of the life available to you now. Release guilt or shame, leave old burdens behind and change habits that no longer support your well-being. The card asks you to take part in your own transformation.

Reversed

Reversed, Death can indicate reluctance to address a health concern or make a needed adjustment. It asks whether an unresolved difficulty has been avoided.

If anxiety has led you to postpone a check-up or treatment, the reading calls for facing that concern and seeking the support needed to deal with it.

Finances

Upright

Death can foretell a significant financial shift for which you are not yet prepared. Put your arrangements in order and give attention to debt, savings and the resources that would help you through a change.

A reserve that could cover six months of expenses is one practical aim in this reading. Financial security can make it easier to manage a setback or an unexpected opportunity. Past mistakes can be acknowledged without allowing them to determine every future decision.

Reversed

Reversed Death can indicate financial decline and the need to rethink how resources are managed. Spending habits may be keeping you in difficulty even while you are trying to reduce debt.

The card calls for responsibility and the release of unhealthy financial patterns. A familiar habit may have to end before the position improves.

Death and Other Cards

A neighbouring card can emphasise, complicate or change the direction of a reading. Compare what each card contributes before deciding how they connect.

The question gives the pair its context

Death brings endings, beginnings, transformation and change into the reading. The Tower adds disaster, turmoil, abrupt change. In a spread, identify which card describes the situation and which describes a response, influence or outcome.

If either card is reversed, compare its reversed interpretation too. A reversal can alter whether a quality is available, obstructed or expressed in a difficult way. The meanings are connected through the question rather than simply added together.

Practise those connections with How to Read Tarot Card Combinations and a three-card spread.

Timing

Death can indicate a significant event within the next 30 days. Significant dates are October 23 to November 22.

Yes or no

The answer is no. Death's emphasis on loss, an ending or the destruction of an old arrangement makes it unfavourable for a question about continuing unchanged. The ending can still lead to a new beginning.

For another card that concerns leaving an unfulfilling situation, read the Eight of Cups. Its departure helps clarify a reading in which the next step involves letting go.

Number and astrological correspondence

Scorpio connects Death with endings and transformation. The reduced Four links it with the Emperor, giving you a way to compare an established structure with the change that ends it. This correspondence describes the card’s symbolism, not the character of every Scorpio person.

The printed number is 13. Under digit reduction it belongs to the 4 family: Emperor and Death. Read the Major Arcana number-family guide for the complete groups and the method used to calculate them.

The Scorpio assignment comes from the Golden Dawn’s Book T. Our tarot and astrology overview explains how the planetary, zodiacal and elemental assignments differ. A correspondence adds to this card’s established meanings; use its position and orientation to decide whether it describes a condition, advice or a forecast.
