Overview

The Hermit, card 9 of the Major Arcana, steps away from the demands of other people to consider what he knows. His lantern gives a small, focused light. It does not reveal the whole road at once.

This card often appears when activity has crowded out reflection. You may have listened to everyone else’s opinion without finding time to hear your own, or become so absorbed in a problem that you can no longer see it clearly.

Solitude can help, provided it has a purpose. The Hermit’s withdrawal is a search for understanding. When that withdrawal becomes a way to avoid contact or responsibility, the card takes on a different meaning. He asks you to notice what time alone is doing for you.

A Closer Look at The Hermit

Description

An older man stands on a snowy height in a grey cloak. He holds a lantern in his right hand and a staff in his left. His head is inclined, with his attention directed towards the light and the ground before him.

Inside the lantern is a six-pointed star, traditionally called the Seal of Solomon. In this card’s symbolism, it is associated with wisdom. The staff supports the Hermit on the narrow path; the snow and height suggest experience gained through a demanding search.

His plain clothing leaves little to distract from the lantern. The scene is quiet and solitary. The Hermit is associated with Virgo, and his number, nine, carries themes of reflection and accomplishment.

Meaning

The Hermit concerns understanding gained through reflection. He can describe your own judgement or guidance from someone who has considered a similar path.

Upright

Upright, the Hermit asks you to make room to think. A pause may let you examine where you have been, what you have learned and how you want to continue.

He can also point to a wise teacher. The emphasis is on guidance that helps you find your own direction. Alongside the High Priestess and Hierophant, he concerns learning, but his search is especially personal and inward.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hermit may suggest that solitude has become isolation. You may have withdrawn through fear or suspicion, or kept an insight to yourself when sharing it would be useful.

The opposite problem is possible: you are following public opinion and moving too quickly to hear your own judgement. Ask whether you need more space for reflection or more contact with the world. The surrounding cards can help distinguish the two.

The Symbolism of The Hermit

  • The lantern: Guidance and alertness in darkness. Its limited light invites attention to what is close enough to see.
  • The six-pointed star: Wisdom and an inner light, formed by two intersecting triangles.
  • The staff: Support on a narrow path and the experience that helps the Hermit remain steady.
  • The grey cloak: Withdrawal from outward display. Simplicity can support attention, though it can also conceal disengagement.
  • The white beard: Age and accumulated experience. The card asks what that experience has taught him.
  • The snow: Stillness, completion and the possibility of a fresh beginning. In another reading, it can suggest something left frozen or unattended.
  • The elevated position: Distance from daily activity and a wider view of one’s life.
  • The bowed head: Attention turned inward and towards the next part of the path.
  • The solitary figure: The part of a search that cannot be delegated. Other people may guide you, but they cannot decide what you believe.

What The Hermit Means in a Reading

Meaning for Love and Relationships

Upright

The Hermit usually indicates that you are not yet ready for the relationship you desire. Solitude will help you discover whether the past still holds you or whether you need a clearer understanding of what you want.

In an established relationship, attention to your partner may have displaced your own needs. Take a little space to reflect, journal and examine both desire and fear. Explain the need for quiet so that the retreat helps you return with greater understanding.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hermit indicates loneliness, including neglect or rejection within a partnership. One person may withdraw while the other clings, or both may be too occupied to connect.

If you have been single for a long time, the card signals that it is time to look for love again and overcome the fear that your chance has passed. After a recent breakup, it can also indicate wanting to reunite with an ex.

Meaning for Career

Upright

The Hermit predicts that a work problem will become clearer when you step away from it. Quiet thought and distance from the immediate demands allow you to see what you have missed.

You will find an alternative route by making room for reflection. Set aside the endless task list long enough to examine the issue and allow a new solution to emerge.

Reversed

After a period of working alone, the reversed Hermit may ask you to share your work or rebuild professional connections. You could be missing information that would become available through a conversation.

It can also reflect withdrawal from colleagues when cooperation is needed. Identify what you want from contact, whether it is feedback, advice or a chance to contribute your own experience.

Meaning for Health and Well-Being

Upright

The Hermit favours rest, quiet and an inward approach to well-being. Gentle practices such as yoga, tai chi or a long walk alone suit his energy. Sleep and a reduction in unnecessary demands are especially important.

Busyness may be concealing a problem you have not wanted to face. Remove the distractions and give yourself time to understand it. A new approach becomes possible when you stop filling every moment.

Reversed

In a health reading, the reversed Hermit can indicate anxiety, paranoia or agoraphobia, particularly where isolation has become distressing. He also gives a stronger warning that continuing without rest will affect your health.

Withdrawal has gone too far when it cuts you off from help and companionship. Make room for both recovery and connection.

Meaning for Finances

Upright

The Hermit advises conserving resources and avoiding large purchases or unnecessary risks. Education and professional development can be a worthwhile investment in yourself.

If you need more income, look first at the skills and experience you already possess. His inward search also includes your beliefs about wealth and poverty. Let go of fear and judgement so that an abundance mindset has room to develop.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hermit points to useful financial guidance from someone wiser or more experienced. This is a favourable time to ask for advice rather than keep the concern entirely to yourself.

Avoid rushing into arrangements you do not understand. A thoughtful conversation can reveal the next step.

Timing

The Hermit predicts an important event within the next 30 days. His Virgo association gives the date range August 23 to September 22.

A period of reflection or guidance may precede the event.

Yes or No Questions

The Hermit usually gives a maybe, or asks you to wait while you consider the issue. A question involving reflection or study fits his meaning more readily than one requiring immediate action.

Reversed, consider whether more thought would help, or whether you have already reflected enough and need to reconnect with other people.
